On this page you can see updates over the term of our activities and learning.
Foundation discovered this morning that we had some sneaky visitors last night trying to build three houses! One from straw, one from sticks and one from bricks! and we also managed to catch one of the visitors in our trap and it was…. THE BIG BAD WOLF!
All the children investigated the story hook table and predicted that our new story this week will be The Three Little Pigs.
The Children used their Oracy skills to predict our new story club book with each other.
Child 1: I can see three little pigs and a big bad wolf. I think our new book is The Three Little Pigs, what do you think it is?
Child 2: I can read this phonics card and it says pig so I think it’s the three little pigs.
Child 3: I think it’s the three little pigs because I can see straws, sticks and bricks.
In foundation this week our story club book is the Three Little Pigs. Foundation have enjoyed learning how to use makaton signs to tell the story of the Three Little Pigs. The children in foundation have been learning all about makaton and how it creates a shared understanding that unites children of diverse communication abilities. In our foundation class we practise makaton as it doesn’t just teach children different ways to communicate, makaton also supports the development of essential skills such as fine motor skills, cognitive abilities, and social interaction.
Didn’t they all do a fantastic job!
The children in foundation had a fantastic trip to the library today. Mrs Wink kindly read us some Traditional tale stories linking to our topic this term. She also kindly let us take some Traditional Tale story books back to our classroom for all of us to enjoy reading.
We all love going to the library and listening to Mrs Wink read.
In foundation this week the children have been learning all about British Birds that we might see around our school. As a part of the RSPB Big School birdwatch Buttercup and Sunflower children went on a muddy walk to the nature area.
Before we went on our school birdwatch the children made some bird food to help feed the birds through the winter and some binoculars to spot all the different types of birds.
On our birdwatch we took a birdwatch tick list and completed the survey from our findings back in class. We saw Wood Pigeons, Crows, Seagulls, a Magpie and a Robin. Miss Wilson also used an app that listens to the birds singing and we identified that the birds singing around us were Robins, Blue tits and Pigeons.
The children had a fantastic afternoon bird watching around our school.
Don’t they look fantastic in their Traditional Tale outfits!
In foundation our topic this term is Traditional Tales. For our hook day the children came dressed as a character from a Traditional Tale story.
The Foundation children discovered this morning that we had a sneaky visitor in our classroom last night, who kindly left us all some ingredients to make gingerbread men. Luckily Miss Wilson had left her phone on record and captured our mystery visitor! and it was.... THE GINGERBREAD MAN!
The children practised their oracy skills by discussing with each other how the gingerbread man had snuck into our classroom.
Child 1: He must have opened the window and jumped in.
Child 2: He used his candy cane to smash the window and break in.
Child 3: He must have jumped out of the oven.
The Gingerbread man kindly left us some ingredients to make some gingerbread. However, before the children made the gingerbread we discussed how we would make the biscuits, bake them and decorate them. The children then designed how they wanted their gingerbread man to look and used their design to decorate their gingerbread man using icing sugar, sprinkles and smarties.
What an exciting and fun filled day they all had!
In foundation our topic this term is Traditional Tales. The children predicted from the story hook display that the first Traditional Tale we are reading is The Gingerbread Man.
The children identified a rolling pin, gingerbread cutters, gingerbread recipe book and they all smelt some ginger.
Child 1: The ginger smells like Oranges.
Child 2: It smells like Chicken.
Child 3: The ginger smells like cake.
Child 4: It smells like gingerbread men.
The foundation children have been super busy making their Christmas cards and 2025 calendars. The children made the cards using different lengths of paper to create Christmas trees. When making these cards the children used maths sentences such as “this piece of paper is longer” and “this piece of paper is shorter”.
Before making the calendars we gathered pupil voice on what the children wanted to have on the front of their calendars. Many children suggested the four seasons as in foundation we have been learning all about the four seasons recently. Therefore, to create the 2025 calendars the children dresses up in spring, summer, autumn and winter clothes.
Haven’t they done a great job!
Using our fine motor skills to decorate trees and gingerbread men
Foundation pupils love decorating their tree in the home corner each day.
The Foundation children have loved coming to school in their Christmas jumpers. They learnt about why we wear Christmas jumpers on Christmas jumper day and how their donations could help other children.
Miss Wilson had a mini me for the day in our matching Christmas jumpers.
Haven't they all done a brilliant job!
Foundation are all ready for the Christmas Costume Competition.
Don't they all look fantastic!
Foundation stage are all enjoying our outdoor role play area that is currently Mrs Claus Bakery.
Practicing our oracy skills, has provided the children with opportunities to take on different roles using appropriate knowledge and vocabulary.
For example:
"How many gingerbread men would you like today?"
"Ok I will get those for you. One moment"
"These gingerbread men taste delicious"
Mark from Humberside Fire & Safety paid us a special visit to deliver a whole school assembly this week. We have been learning about road safety in our classes through different activities. He used demonstrations and visuals to show us the importance of wearing helmets when we cycle or scooter, as well as how important it is to be visible and wear bright colours around roads.
As part of our learning about the festival Diwali we made Diva lamps. We used salt dough. When they dry we painted them and added sparkly details.
Foundation stage children looked at the seasonal changes and the colours of the autumn leaves. They used small brushes to paint a trees trunk and branches. After this we used our fingers to paint the autumn leaves. Our creations are displayed on our art gallery.
Can you spot our hedgehogs? We used forks to print the spines.
Zowie from Compass GO joined FOundation classes this morning to do a workshop on understanding and managing feelings.
She shared The Colour Monster story and taught us some breathing techniques to help us if we need to feel calm.
Today we all got to test out our new balance bikes.
In maths today we have been learning about heavy and light. We used the balance scales to see what was heavier and lighter.
We are reading a story about Anna Hibiscus. She likes to climb a mango tree in her garden. We wondered what mangoes tasted like so we gave them a try.
“Sweet and juicy”
“Soft and sticky”
“ sour and squishy”
“Yummy”
“Delicious and tasty”
Thank you to all those who came to Mrs Smith’s Early Reading Workshop today.
It was lovely to see so many of you and hear how keen you are to help your children with reading at home.
The slideshow to accompany the workshop has now been added to the class pages. We look forward to the Maths workshop next week.
In foundation we have started our daily phonics lesson. We are learning new sounds and sayings to help us with letter formation.
We are learning to talk to our partners, my turn and your turn as well as phonics celebration actions.
